Sharp White Background

The title of this tumblr is inspired by the Zora Neale Hurston quote from her essay "how it feels to be colored me": "I feel most colored when I am thrown against a sharp white background." It serves as the title and inspiration for an amazing work by Glenn Ligon.

This tumblr is a reflection of my art aesthetics but also hopes to highlight art and related topics that are sometimes marginalized within the 'sharp white background' of the mainstream art world.

Andres Bedoya   “Ultra Madre”   [Video]

In 2009 Andres Bedoya organized a haunting performance installation “Ultra Madre,” in which 57 women lay still on the scaffolding of the main arch of the Museo Nacional de Arte in La Paz, Bolivia. For one hour the women did not move, their long, black hair cascading down the 15-foot structure.

Installation and Performance - mixed media, approx. 8’ w x 15’ h x 5’ d, National Museum of Art, La Paz, Bolivia, 2009.
